Hurricane Sandy’s Aftermath

How you can help… Millions of people have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. If you’d like to aid the relief effort, please make a contribution to the American Red Cross.

In a matter of hours, Hurricane Sandy devastated the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. During yesterday’s storm, tens of thousands of people from across the eastern seaboard shared their experience in real-time, tagging photos with #sandy and #hurricanesandy.

This morning, as the rain tapered and floodwaters receded, millions of people began taking stock of the storm’s historic devastation, and sharing their daunting road to recovery on Instagram.

See some of the more powerful photos from Sandy’s aftermath here and here, and make a contribution to the relief effort at redcross.org.

Last Jan I had my first real experience of what I have come to call the “American Extra Mile”.

What I talk of is the service culture that is ingrained in most U.S. businesses/ companies/brands. It will always impress European visitors to this country and has always been a talking point since before I even moved here.

I always find that it makes my shopping experience a thoroughly enjoyable one – even though I don’t particularly like to shop!

I love how brands here always pursue the perfect consumer experience. What you take for granted here and expect, I really appreciate. It’s so important, yet so simple to achieve!

How much does a smile really cost!?

What I always appreciate are the smiles I get walking around U.S stores. I know it makes an impression because parting with my money always feels a lot easier.

Fact:

When I spent money in a Sephora the other day – getting a little present for a friend – and the clerk was so helpful that I bought a second gift for another friend.

I will be broke at this rate! I see these things as a marketer, and you’d think that by now I’d be wise to their tricks!

What you can expect in Ireland most of the time is a grunt – or to be ignored – as you enter a store. Then, when you ask for help, you will feel like you’ve just asked them to overthrow a government. But I have experience working in the retail industry and I blame the management.

I see service culture here and it’s the store managers who champion the culture from the top-down! How you can smile so much in one day – even when some people don’t deserve a smile – I applaud.

Smiles and frowns can be the difference between success and failure in the service industry!

If I were a business owner in Ireland, I would be taking a leaf out of the service culture Americans have come to expect and bring in some “Smile Training”! I really do hope that a healthy balance of the service culture here crosses over into Europe.

I hope to someday walk into a Panera Bread (please, God, open one up in Dublin) where they take your first name to call you when your food is ready! Just that simple procedure makes me feel like a valued customer.

How I’m not huge yet is a shock because it’s so easy and affordable to get a nice meal with great service! I’m for bringing Panera Bread and Chipotle, specifically, back to Ireland to make a killing!

“Is that an Irish Bróg I hear?”

This is usually the first sentence out of anyone’s mouth following me uttering a word!

I was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. I recently swapped Dublin’s fair city for the bright lights of New York City. I was offered a position as Head of Digital Engagement with BigBuzz Marketing Group. I classify myself as one of the lucky ones.

Ireland has been a casualty of this recession more than most nations.

While I watched many friends leave for the Southern Hemisphere, I left of my own accord for an opportunity to reach for my dream:

To work in advertising in New York City.

Way before Mad Men, I wanted to be a “Mad Man” – to face the creative challenge of selling someone an idea. I happened to see the potential in social media early on, and spent years developing a creative – and functional – understanding of pretty much everything in the social media space.

In today’s market, that’s what gives me an edge.

This is where creativity comes into things. I swear there’s a point to all of this.

When I got asked to blog for Creative Week, I wanted my first blog post to give insight to why it’s all so important to me. I think that being a creative person and working in this industry is not just a job – it becomes a way of life.

I find it very hard to switch off, and how could I!

On average, Americans are exposed to 3,000 marketing messages per day!

One of the first experiences that really stood out after moving was my first trip to Times Square. The only thing I can compare it to is being a rookie playing his first game in Yankee Stadium.

As far as inspirational speeches go Bruce Springsteen’s short keynote speech from SXSW is definitely one everyone should watch. Bruce is one of the most respected artists out there and he has lived and breathed music his entire life…… so I’m sure he’s learned a thing or two. He asks young musicians to be confident in their abilities but also think they can do better. A little bit devastated to find out my new favourite track, Ill Manors from Plan B was a sample. It’s still an unreal track but the use of cello’s in the track had a really cool Hitchcock feel and it’s a sample from Peter Fox a German rapper. So I gotta post the original, very cool track, crazy lyrics if you watch a video with subtitles and a mental video filled with monkey masks!
